Renegotiating space

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the urban developments of 44 Stanley and Arts on Main in Johannesburg, questioning their role in fostering social connections versus reinforcing suburban isolation. Analyzing these spaces as both incubators of urban social interaction and fortified enclaves, it compares them to the more cohesive and socially engaging Maboneng district. Ultimately, the authors argue that while the former may provide a semblance of urban engagement, the latter offers a genuine pathway for increased social interaction across different societal boundaries.

Key takeaways

Arts on Main and 44 Stanley function as fortified enclaves resembling suburban malls, limiting urban engagement.
Maboneng district promotes social interaction and diversity through its open, permeable urban design.
Gentrification in Johannesburg, compared to SoHo, has minimal displacement due to existing affordable spaces.
44 Stanley has stagnant user demographics, while Arts on Main fosters a dynamic cultural environment.
Skateboarding initiatives in Maboneng encourage cross-class interactions and redefine urban social dynamics.
