Orange Farm Soup kitchen

This Community Engagement and Design-Build project in Kanana Park, completed in 2020, demonstrates that the DoA’s ongoing DesignBuild culture is still alive and well and relevant to the DoA’s strong communityfocused identity. The Design-Build culture builds on the Informal Studio collaborations Alexander Opper initiated in Ruimsig in 2011, followed by the teaching-and-learning links he made between third-year and first-year master’s students, binding undergraduate and graduate courses together (from 2012 onwards with Informal Studio in Marlboro South, and later Aformal Studio in Denver).
The Kanana Park Soup Kitchen project, begun in 2018, was completed and launched in 2020.

This current project adds to the long and consistent record of the older projects above as well as other, more recent design-build iterations, namely the work at @94 Republic in 2017, driven by Jason Frenkel and Deborah Kirkman, and the realized student-designed children’s playground in Chimpamba, northern Malawi, led by Opper in 2016: see https://www.a4ac.co.za/ruralplayground.
